13. AI Use in Lab
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for general use in the lab is strongly discouraged. Certain do NOTs include:
- Generating ideas for projects, papers, topics, etc.
- Generating hypotheses ideas or actual written terms
- Writing any portion of a paper including simple sentences, direct paragraphs, or entire papers (this will be considered plagiarism in submission)
- Writing emails to others both to those within and outside of the lab
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be acceptable in the following scenarios:
- When asking for support within the lab.
- In spaces outside of the lab before seeking answers.
If you find yourself wanting to reach for AI for help within the lab, consider the following: Using alternative, privacy respectful tools like:
- https://jan.ai/ for general use
- https://languagetool.org/ for assistance on grammar, syntax, and other technical aspects
- When this tool is in use, it is important to be critical of resulting suggestions for change.
- When asking to summarize, be especially weary as the AI shortened text will likely miss key points of information
Regardless of your position, be critically aware of the environmental, societal, and economic consequences of data centers, sources of data, and other related factors used by these services.
