11. Mattermost Code Of Conduct

Welcome to the Data Diversity Lab!

1. Mattermost Server

Mattermost allows us to communicate between ourselves more effectively, share resources, schedule meetings, and plan of our projects with organization boards, among others. All lab members, undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and postdocs are encouraged to use Mattermost from the browser or install it on their desktops, laptops, or phones. Invitation to Mattermost will be provided upon onboarding to the lab. You can get started using Mattermost by reviewing their official documentation: https://docs.mattermost.com/.

2. The Lab

The Data Diversity Lab focuses on utilizing data science and bioinformatics to address essential inquiries at the crossroads of various disciplines, including ecology, evolution, human health, and software development. Our research revolves around harnessing extensive datasets, devising inventive methods to manage intricate data structures, and implementing cutting-edge machine learning approaches. Our primary goal is to tackle significant challenges in biodiversity conservation, phylogenetics, and the effects of climate change on ecological systems and humanity. The concept of Data Diversity underscores our dedication to employing information from diverse origins while fostering inclusivity and advocating diversity initiatives within academia.

The current admin is: @cromanpa

We want this to be a fun, pleasant, and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

3. Transparency

The server includes a series of private and public channels. Private channels with students and non-core staff members include always at least three participants. For core-staff and PI, this requirement is lifted to allow for confidentiality in tasks. Communication with and between students through direct messages is strongly discouraged. In short, every channel or communication within the server should have involved (1) at least three members, and (2) at least one member from leadership.

4. Confidentiality

While we expect members to honor the confidentiality of this space, we cannot guarantee that they will do so--nor can we guarantee that every member's login credentials and logged-in devices are secure. Please exercise caution and refrain from sharing sensitive information that could harm you or others if it became public.

5. Message Retention

Data Diversity Lab’s Mattermost uses our own server’s message retention features to store messages and uploaded files. Our retention policies follow the standard ones for Mattermost (https://docs.mattermost.com/comply/data-retention-policy.html). Note that all the messages and files sent in public and private chats will be stored only in our server. We will not delete messages or files unless there is a failure in our systems.

6. Harassment

Harrassment includes:

  • Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment.
  • Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names
  • Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior in spaces where they’re not appropriate
  • Simulated physical contact (e.g. textual descriptions like “hug” or “backrub”) without consent or after a request to stop.
  • Threats of violence
  • Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm
  • Deliberate intimidation
  • Sustained disruption of discussion
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease
  • Publication of non-harassing private communication

7. Reporting

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the admins. They'll respond as promptly as they can. We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

8. Credits and License This code of conduct is based on Annalee Flower Horne's Sample Slack Code of Conduct, which is in turn based on Geek Feminism's Community Anti-Harassment Policy. We have adapted the Sample Slack server Code of Conduct for our own use under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.
